Cornwall is one of the strongest parts of the UK for solar, both for the sunshine it gets and for how the planning rules generally work in your favour.
Solar irradiance
Cornwall gets more sun than most of the UK.
How much a solar panel system generates depends heavily on solar irradiance: the amount of solar energy a location receives over a year, usually measured in kWh per kWp of installed panel capacity. Cornwall is consistently ranked among the highest-irradiance parts of the UK, typically around 1,000 to 1,050 kWh/kWp per year, compared to a UK-wide average of roughly 900 kWh/kWp and around 750 to 850 kWh/kWp in parts of Scotland.
In practice, that means a solar system in Cornwall will generally produce more electricity, and pay itself back faster, than the same system installed further north. Your exact figures will depend on your roof’s orientation, pitch and any shading, which is why every quote starts with a proper site survey rather than a generic estimate.

Planning permission
Cornwall National Landscape and your roof.
Most homes in Cornwall fall under permitted development for solar panels, meaning no planning application is needed, even within Cornwall National Landscape (the area formerly known as the Cornwall AONB). National Landscape status does not remove permitted development rights for domestic solar installations.
There are a few situations where permission is needed:
Listed buildings
Always require listed building consent, even where otherwise permitted development.
Conservation areas
Panels on a wall or roof facing a highway need a householder application; rear or side installs usually don’t.
Protrusion limits
Panels generally can’t protrude more than 200mm from the roof plane, or be fitted to a chimney.
